I can’t believe that I almost forgot about the Great American Meatout, which takes place Saturday. To be fair, I do have a region-specific excuse, what with living in a Dubya Free Zone and all, but I think if I was to be American, Philadelphia is looking pretty sweet. I mean, check out this op-ed on the Philadelphia Daily News’ website – I’m severely impressed to see a page like this anywhere on the interweb, let alone on a non-vegan news site. I know Meatout is basically a year-round event for a lot of you, but for those of you just joining us from… somewhere, you really should check that link out. It’s just words. They don’t hurt none.

Ok, you know how you went to your computers this morning looking for porn? Mine was all broken and stuff, and hence the lack of entries. The computer was fine, it was the stupid interweb that was down. I had a backup plan, and that failed, and the backup to the backup failed, and believe it or not, there’s a level three backup in the Thrust Labs Disaster Recovery Plan, and it too failed. Things are finally back up, and the interweb isn’t really any better. It’s just back. There are some gems though – go check out the latest Green Goat whilst I dig my way out of the backlog and come up with a better plan.

For your Monday morning perusal and enjoyment, VeganMegan has prepared, compiled, and otherwise assembled the latest edition of The Green Goat. Get it while it’s hot, and never forget to lather, rinse, and repeat.

Here’s a post for Canadians who watch their publicly funded television station: Anita passed on a note from Dave Amos of the Calgary Vegetarian Society: “I just finished watching ‘The National’ and they will be airing a series next week on food and diet. They are calling on viewers to email their suggestions for possible segments in the series. I believe if we can act quickly with enough emails, this may be an excellent opportunity to present the benefits of a plant based diet to a large audience.” There’s a contact link here where you can remind the producers that plants are indeed among “The Foods We Eat” (the name of the series). Hey, wanna know what would have been a great addition to this post? The Nature of Things, which Rosemary notes is doing a two parter on food production. Unfortunately, the first segment on corporate agriculture aired last night. The second part is on “alternative agriculture”, and while it could be all about free range meat for all I know, it’s airing on the 14th, which I’ll emphasize occurs in the future. Sorry ’bout that.

veganUU requested that we pass along news of PETA’s latest contest, and unlike the last one, this one appears to be international, which means we won’t need to make our own version this time. That’s probably a good thing, because you would have had to prepare well in advance for this one. Still, feel free to practice as much as you can for next year. What am I talking about? What am I ever talking about? Making babies, that’s what. PETA’s looking for the first vegan baby of 2004, and they’ve got some swell prizes. What’s more, unlike any contest of this nature that we’d run, they’re not looking for the rights to name the offspring.

VeganUU would like to point out that I am not, in fact, the sexiest vegetarian in America, and she’s using the full power of PETA to prove it. They’re running their Are You A Hot Tamale? contest, in which one can submit photographs and win regional and perhaps national prizes, if one lives in the USA, for being hot. Of course, I’d be happy to challenge the winner to a walk off if he or she is brave enough to face me on my native soil.

VeganMegan‘s got the newest issue of The Green Goat zine available for download, if you’re so inclined. If you’re not up to the printing adventure, get thee to Toronto on October 19th for Canzine, where VP will have a table chock full of ziney goodness. If you prefer Chicago, go there… soon… for something… October 11. That’s it. Tired now.

We alluded to it here, and we’re furthering the hype right here, because we’re secretly jealous of Portland and/or people who run vegan stores. “Welcome to Portland’s first vegan grocery, Food Fight!, where junk food meets activism halfway.“

Want a t-shirt? The store is now open. We went with a different domain for the store because we figured people might not want “vegan porn” showing on their credit cards, but we think you’ll find that the products are in keeping with the VP spirit. Enjoy!
