Ask Y’all

I think we’ve posted some of these before, but hey, it’s always time for colon cleansing photos! Dagda Samildanc sent in the latest batch, which I like mostly for the disclaimer at the bottom, which goes along the lines of “there are no studies to show the benefits of colon cleansing, but check out these pictures and figure it out for yourselves.” Has anyone had any experience with this stuff? I don’t know anything beyond pics like these, which are fun and all, but I’ve been told you can only go so far in life without actually reading the articles. Link.

Ask Y’all: Microwave much?

by Jason on December 8, 2005

So Steve Pavlina’s talking about his microwave-free life, and we’ve probably talked about this before, but it got me to wondering – how many of you use a microwave in your cooking? We didn’t have one for years, then one appeared with our new place (it wasn’t in the contract, but there it was), and while we’ve yet to get into the habit, I’ve taken to microwaved oatmeal for breakfast/random snack, and it’s gotta be healthier than frying food… What about y’all?

Ask Y’all: What would you say WITH food?

by Jason on November 8, 2005

Talk amongst yourselves: given the ability to emboss foods with a message, what food, and what message would you pick?

This is the greatest thing ever! Did anyone see the movie They Live? OK, that wasn’t the greatest thing ever, at all, but they had these special glasses in the movie that showed the viewer the “real world” which had all kinds of subliminal messages keeping people in control. Now, wouldn’t it be great to have some way of seeing hidden messages, like, say, if you fly Alaskan Airlines, you’re supporting a company that ships 30 million pounds of seafood a year? The greatest thing ever is that as Dave Noisy reports, they’ve done it for you with their new paint job, where the plane looks like a big salmon. I’m hoping this catches on, and companies like Procter & Gamble change their packaging to “celebrate” vivisection, and so on. More seriously, I’ve been thinking lately about what businesses I give my money to and how it’ll ultimately get used. Frankly, I’m getting tired of the free market crap where my dollar is supposed to be a vote for a company’s product lines, and (according to the theory) I should be buying veggie burgers from companies who slaughter animals to convince them to put more resources into the non-death products. While airlines are pretty much all the same (and they also ship vegan donuts, and if we just bought a few more I’m sure someone will start painting a plane for us), does anyone have any advice for supporting veganism at the consumer level?

Ask Y’all: How clean do you keep your kitchen?

by Jason on September 22, 2005

There’s a guy going around saying that your toilet is cleaner than your kitchen sink, and furthermore, “if a carrot dropped in toilet and it dropped in the kitchen sink, I

Here’s a debate for the weekend: I found Steve Pavlina’s site through a link on svn to this article on marketing from your conscience. The basic premise: “You must become so convinced of the benefits of your product or service that you feel you’d be unjustly depriving people by not doing everything in your power to get the word out.” How does this mindset apply to your veganism? There’s a parallel here with some religious groups and their approaches to outreach, but instead of a faith-based “product,” we’re talking about a diet that’s medically proven to reduce numerous health problems, scientifically proven to help the environment, and [some word]ly proven to be more compassionate towards animals. Do you feel that you have an ethical obligation to promote veganism?

misanthropy was wondering how people have been doing with Evolution brand cat food. Apparently some cats have had some issues, which I can’t confirm or deny, since I don’t live with any cats, and I don’t eat Evolution brand cat food myself, because it’s not available in “hummus” flavour. I’m just activating the porn signal on this one, but feel free to post any stories here in addition to emailing them. [click to continue…]

Set opinions on stun…

by Jason on May 24, 2005

Feel like ranting? Check out the article that WatermelonBoy sent in: “ if vegetarians can get good meals throughout Melbourne, from cheap to expensive, do we still need dedicated vegetarian restaurants?” People are silly. Link.

Ask Y’all: online veg product directories?

by Jason on February 23, 2005

An anonymous reader writes, “I am a vegetarian, but I just decided that I don’t want to use any shampoos or cosmetics that use animal products. Is there a list someone knows of that lists WHAT products are animal or not? I just don’t know what to look for in the ingredients.” Got any links to product or ingredient lists (besides out beloved booze list)? Post ‘em here.

FootFace wrote in with some questions about raising a vegan child – not how to do it, but how to convince the (vegan) mother that everything’s going to be OK. Read on for details… [click to continue…]
